Red Eyed Tree Frogs
The Red Eyed Tree Frog is most famous for, you guessed it, their big, bright red eyes. They are from the rainforest of Central America and grow to be three inches.
Their legs and arms [really long compared to their bodies] are better for climbing than swimming. That explains why these guys spend almost their whole lives in trees. Each finger and toe has “sucker pads” on the end. These let them “stick” to leaves and branches as they move along them, especially when the leaves and branches are wet. They are also great at jumping.
It’s not just their eyes that are brightly colored. Their whole body is bright too. It’s called “flash colors” and here’s why.
When another creature is looking at the Red Eyed Tree Frog and getting ready to have them for lunch, the Red Eyed Tree Frog will jump. Their bright colors leave a flash in the eyes of the other guy and they can’t see where the Red Eyed Tree Frog has gone to hide.
Red-eyed Tree Frogs are not fussy eaters. They’ll eat any animal that will fit into their mouths, even other frogs!
